Lake Ridge Community residents were invited to safely dispose of potentially dangerous prescription drugs in a safe and non-hazardous manner today at their monthly meeting. Captain James Harris and Lieutenant Pat Dellane were on hand with our Mobile Project Medicine Drop Box to collect unused and expired prescription drugs. In 2017 we collected over a ton of prescription drugs, so far in 2018 we are on track to do the same. Today we collected 29lbs to add to our total. Once collected, the drugs are incinerated.
The success of this program is in part due to our proactive approach and the resident’s participation. Most individuals are not aware of methods to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away; both of which have potential safety and health hazards. It is also important to keep medications out of the hands of those they are not intended for.
Residents can dispose of unused or expired medication on a year-round basis, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, at Toms River Police Headquarters 255 Oak Avenue, Toms River (Front lobby of the Police Department). The program is completely anonymous.
